Motorised Roller Blinds

Ease of Use

Motorisation makes raising, lowering, or adjusting blinds effortless, even for individuals with limited mobility or strength. It's particularly beneficial for elderly individuals or those with disabilities.

Precision Control

Motorised blinds allow for precise control over light levels and privacy, as they can be adjusted to specific positions or programmed to operate at scheduled times. This level of control enhances comfort and energy efficiency.

Integration with Smart Home Systems

Motorised roller blinds can be integrated with smart home systems, such as voice assistants or home automation platforms. This allows for seamless control and coordination with other smart devices in the home.

Energy Efficiency

By automating the opening and closing of blinds based on sunlight and temperature levels, motorised roller blinds can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce reliance on heating and cooling systems. This leads to energy savings and lower power bills.

Enhanced Security

Motorised blinds can create the illusion of occupancy by opening and closing at programmed times, enhancing home security and deterring potential intruders

Customisation

Motorised roller blinds can be customised with additional features, such as sun sensors or timers, to further tailor their operation to your preferences and lifestyle.

Back vs. Front Roll (also known as Standard vs. Reverse Roll) / Face Fit vs. Reveal Fit (also known as Outside vs. Inside Mount)

There are two basic manufacturing methods for Roller Blinds.
Front Roll” where the fabric rolls forward over the tube and “Back Roll” where the fabric rolls back behind the tube.

There are two basic installation methods, inside the window reveal “Inside Mount” or outside the window on the architrave or wall “Outside Mount”.

Therefore, in all there are four (4) basic options for roller blinds.

Inside Mount Back Roll

Pro’s

  • Able to be mounted close to the glass minimising light gap.
  • Dust and fade lines remain at the back of the blind.
  • Easy access to the control chain.

Con’s

  • The adjustment to allow for the brackets inside the frame means there is a gap on the sides of the blind. This is negated to some degree because the fabric is close to the glass.
  • The fabric rolling backwards means the back of the fabric is visible at the roll. This is not a big deal but must be considered on a backed fabric where the backing is a different colour. A pelmet could be suggested as a remedy to this situation.

Inside Mount Front Roll

Pro’s

  • The fabric rolling forward means the roll is covered by the fabric.

Con’s

  • Because the fabric is further away from the glass there is a greater light gap at the sides of the blind.
  • Should the blind be left up for any period of time a dust and fade line may appear across the blind.
  • The control chain will be behind the blind making it more difficult to operate.
  • With the control chain being behind the blind the user will rub the edge of the blind during operation possibly causing fraying.

Outside Mount Back Roll

Pro’s

  • Able to be mounted close to the window minimising light gap.
  • Able to be mounted past the window opening minimising light gap.
  • Dust and fade lines remain at the back of the blind.
  • Easy access to the control chain.

Con’s

  • The fabric rolling backwards means the back of the fabric is visible at the roll. This is not a big deal but must be considered on a backed fabric where the backing is a different colour. A pelmet could be suggested as a remedy to this situation.

Outside Mount Front Roll

Pro’s

  • The fabric rolling forward means the roll is covered by the fabric.

Con’s

  • Because the fabric is further away from the glass there is a greater light gap at the sides of the blind even if the blind is mounted past the window opening.
  • Should the blind be left up for any period of time a dust line may appear across the blind.

Pelmet vs. No Pelmet

Pelmet

Choose roller blinds with a pelmet for added aesthetic appeal and light blockage. Pelmet options provide a finished look to your window treatments while minimising light gaps and enhancing insulation.

No Pelmet

Opt for roller blinds without a pelmet for a minimalist appearance and maximum visibility of the fabric. Ideal for modern spaces or where space constraints are a consideration.

Linked Roller Blinds aka Coupled Shades

Great for large openings such as Sliding Doors, Bifold Doors, and side by side windows with small gaps or when windows exceed maximum recommended widths.

Choose from a standard, one-control system or independently operated roller blinds.

  • Standard: Allows two blinds to be operated together by one control.
  • Independently Operated: Allows each blind to be operated separately.

Size Limitations

Roller blinds have specific size limitations, and going too wide, too narrow, or too long can affect functionality and aesthetics. Roller blinds with a width less than 600mm, more than 2400mm, and/or 2200mm in height are not warranted against bowing, bagging, sagging, veeing, tracking, fraying. These are considered normal characteristics of the product and are the acceptable standards industry-wide. They are not a manufacturing defect either. Consult with our experts to determine the optimal size for your windows and avoid potential issues.

Cassette Roller Blinds

Specifically designed to block incoming light escaping off the top and sides of the window opening.

Fully enclosed system consists of a headbox, a set of side channels and a bottom channel.

UNDERSTANDING ROLLER BLINDS

The inherant characteristics of roller blinds that can be found in any roller blind in the market

At V Custom Blinds we always strive to provide the highest quality window treatment solutions, so we are communicating these industry-wide operating and fabric characteristics.

Side Light Gaps

All roller blinds have top & side light gaps because the fabric is not as wide as the tube it rolls up onto to accommodate the mounting brackets and either the chain drive or the spring tensioning dial or the motor. If total privacy or room darkness is desired, these gaps must be considered. For the ultimate room-darkening solution, choose our Fully Enclosed Cassette system with integrated side, top and bottom channels.

Telescoping or Tracking

Occurs when the fabric does not roll up straight onto the roller tube and may cause fabric fraying as a result of continual contact with the clutch / chain drive. Often due to window frame or house not being level.

Fabric Fraying

Often a natural occurrence associated with certain fabrics but may also be caused by continual contact with the operating clutch. (see Telescoping or Tracking).

Curling or Cupping

Fabric edges occasionally may curl. This occurs due to the weight of the fabric and should be considered a normal characteristic. Fabric panel will often appear taut at the top, near the tube and at the bottom, towards the bottom bar. Curling is more noticeable in the middle of the blind. This may be avoided by splitting the blind into two separate blinds (see Linked Roller Blinds aka Coupled Shades above).

Deflection

Shows up as V pattern in the middle of the blind fabric. Occurs when the blind is in a raised position for a long period of time. For wider shades with heavier fabrics, the metal tube may sag over time. As a result, deflection may be more pronounced.

Fabric Rippling or Waving

Vertical or diagonal ripples in the fabric may be a result of minor imperfections of fabric weaving or that the blind is not rolled properly. May be avoided by splitting the blind into two separate blinds.

Fabric Twisting

Fabric may twist vertically when the blind is long and narrow. This is considered normal and is not a manufacturing defect.

How do I clean roller blinds?

Simply use a good quality feather duster or a soft vacuum brush attachment to gently remove dust and debris. For spot cleaning, gently wipe with a baby wipe or a soft cloth dampened with water. For deeper cleaning, lightly sponge with a mild detergent and warm water, then blot dry.

Do light filtering fabrics and translucent fabrics offer full privacy at night?

Light filtering roller blind fabrics provide varying degrees of privacy depending on factors such as the fabric opacity, lighting conditions inside and outside the room, and the distance from which someone may view into the room.

What roller blinds are best for office spaces?
